A guy in Meridian called us about tire removal last spring. Four mud-terrain truck tires, stacked behind his garage since the winter before last, when he had new ones mounted and told the shop he'd handle the old set himself. Saved about twenty bucks that afternoon.

Two years later the stack had filled with rainwater and grown a green skin on top.

That's how a lot of these calls start. Somebody waves off the disposal fee at the counter, and the tires never actually go anywhere after that.

So will the tire shop take your old ones? Usually. There are strings attached, though, and the strings are where people get tripped up.

The shop takes them, but mostly while you're standing at the counter

Here's the part nobody spells out: most shops recycle your old tires when they're the ones replacing them. You buy four, they pull four, they charge a per-tire disposal fee, the old set goes in the bin out back. Done.

Walking in three weeks later with tires rolling around in the back of your rig is a different conversation.

Some shops in Boise and Nampa will still take them for a fee. Plenty won't, and it's not them being difficult. They pay a hauler by count or by weight, the bin goes out on a schedule, and loose tires from the public blow through that budget fast. Policies swing store to store even inside the same chain, so call the actual location near you instead of the 800 number.

Stuff shops commonly turn down or charge extra for:

Tires still mounted on rims (a few bucks each to dismount, if they'll do it at all)
Tractor, skid steer, and other oversized ag tires
More than a handful at once, like a cleanout pile or a contractor load
Tires full of water, mud, or whatever's been living in them

Tip: Before you call anybody, stand your tires on edge for a day so the water drains out. A waterlogged passenger tire can hold 20 or 30 pounds of swamp, and everyone who touches it after you will quietly thank you.

What tire removal actually costs around the Treasure Valley

There's no single price here, but the ranges are pretty predictable. This is roughly how the options shake out for a normal set of four passenger tires.

When tire removal is worth paying someone else for

Yes, we'd love the job. But if you've got four car tires, a pickup, and a free Saturday, run them to the landfill yourself. That's the cheaper move and I'm not going to pretend otherwise.

Where it flips is volume and awkwardness.

Ten tires don't fit in a Camry. Neither do two tractor tires, a set of duallys, or the pile you inherited when you bought that place out past Kuna with a shop building full of somebody else's leftovers. Once you're looking at three trips, the gas and the time and the sore back start eating the savings.

It flips when the tires are nasty, too. A stack that's been sitting in a side yard in Nampa for five years is usually holding water, silt, spiders, and sometimes a mouse situation. We've opened up piles with all four going on at once.

And if you already have a cleanout happening, garage, shop, rental turnover, adding the tires to the same tire removal pickup barely moves the price. The truck is already coming.

The oddball tires nobody warns you about

Passenger tires are the easy case. What stumps people is everything else.

Lawn mower tires. Wheelbarrow tires. Utility trailer tires, ATV and side-by-side tires, the boat trailer tires that dry-rotted in the sun off Chinden. Shops often won't touch these, because they don't sell them and the recyclers price them oddly.

Curbside trash isn't an option either. Tires stay out of regular garbage across Idaho because they work their way up through landfill cover and they burn badly, which is why every legal route costs something.

Western Recycling and the scrap yards will take your rims all day, since steel and aluminum are worth money. The rubber is a cost, not a commodity. Idaho Youth Ranch and the thrift stores won't take tires at all, so save yourself that trip.

One thing worth knowing: tires don't get worse slowly, they get worse all at once. A stack that looks fine in March is a mosquito nursery by July and a rodent condo by October. The longer they sit, the worse the eventual cleanup.

Bottom line

Buying new tires this week? Pay the shop's disposal fee. It's the cheapest tire removal you'll ever get and it costs you zero effort.

If the tires are already sitting in the yard, call the closest shop and ask flat out whether they take drop-offs and what they charge. Some will. If they say no, or you've got more than a car's worth, it's a landfill run or a pickup.
