A guy over by Hillcrest called us on a Tuesday last June. His daughter's graduation party was that Saturday, and he wanted to know if we could have the pool demolition done before people showed up. Backyard cleared, dirt smooth, no hole in the ground.

Honest answer was no. Not because breaking up a pool takes that long. Because of everything stacked around it.

Most people get surprised twice. The machine work goes quicker than they expect, and the whole process takes a lot longer. Here's how the days actually shake out on a Boise-area job.

The demo part is shorter than you'd guess

Once the water's gone and the equipment is sitting in the yard, an inground pool comes apart fast.

A partial fill on a standard 16x32 gunite pool means punching drainage holes through the bottom, dropping the top few feet of wall into the shell, then backfilling and compacting. That's usually one to two days of actual work.

Full removal runs two to four days. Every piece of concrete and rebar comes out, which means more loads hauled to the Ada County Landfill, scrap steel run over to Western Recycling, and clean fill trucked back in.

Vinyl liner pools are the quickest of the bunch. Fiberglass shells move along too, assuming we can break the shell down and walk it out without taking a section of your fence with it.

So the digging isn't your bottleneck. Everything in front of it is.

What actually stretches out a pool demolition timeline

From your first phone call to a finished yard, most Treasure Valley jobs land somewhere between two and five weeks. Almost all of that is scheduling and paperwork, not labor.

Permit. Boise, Meridian, and Nampa each run their own process. Turnaround is anywhere from a few days to about two weeks, depending on how backed up the counter is.
Utility locates. Call 811 and wait the two working days. The gas line to the heater, the pool's electrical run, and your sprinkler mains all get marked before a bucket touches dirt.
Draining. Getting rid of the water is its own small project, and we walked through it in what to do with the water before pool demolition.
Inspection. Some jurisdictions want eyes on the open shell before it gets filled. That's a scheduled visit, not a quick phone call.

None of those steps are long by themselves. Stacked end to end, they're your three weeks.

Tip: If you're planning to sell, pull the permit and hang onto the final inspection paperwork. Buyers' agents around Ada County ask for it, and a documented fill holds up a lot better at the closing table than your word that it was done right.

A realistic schedule for a Boise pool job

Here's roughly how a normal job spreads out. Your yard might shave time off one stage and add it back on another, but this is close for most homes we see.

Add it up and you're at two to five weeks, with maybe four or five of those days involving anybody in your backyard.

One thing swings the demo days more than anything else: how we get a machine back there. A wide side yard with a gate we can pull off the hinges is a different job than a 34-inch gap between the house and the neighbor's fence. Not sure which one you've got? Does a partial fill really save you days?

Yes. Just not as many as people hope.

The savings come out of haul-off. Fewer truck trips, fewer hours. Around here that's often the difference between a job in the $5,000 range and one closer to $11,000 or $12,000 on a mid-size pool, and it buys back a day, maybe two.

What you don't skip is the permit, the locates, the drain, or the compaction. Those happen either way. So if you were hoping partial fill turns a three-week project into a three-day one, it doesn't.

How weather shifts pool demolition timing around here

Spring is the sneaky one. Treasure Valley clay holds water, and a wet April yard turns into ruts the second a machine rolls across it. We'll still do the work. We might just wait a few days after a good rain instead of tearing up your lawn for no reason.

Deep winter is a different problem. You can't properly compact frozen fill, and frost in the ground makes for uneven settling once it thaws. That's how you end up with a soft spot in the yard two summers later.

Late June through October is the good stretch. Dry ground, workable dirt, and enough season left for grass or gravel to settle in.

Catch is, everybody wants that same window. Our July and August calendars fill up weeks ahead. If you're thinking about a fall job, calling in May is not too early.

Bottom line

The backhoe work is a few days. The calendar around it is a few weeks.

Plan on four to five weeks total if you've got a hard deadline like a listing or a party, and you'll be in good shape. Yes, we'd love the job, but you're better off hearing that now than three days before the party.
