Appliance Removal in Boise: Will the Store Take the Old One?
Wondering if the delivery crew will haul off your old fridge or washer? Here's what free haul-away really covers in Boise and what appliance removal costs.

The new fridge shows up right on schedule. The crew wheels it in, hooks up the water line, then looks at the old one sitting in the garage and says they can't take that one. Nobody expects to be calling about appliance removal in Boise the same week they bought a brand new appliance, but that's how it goes sometimes.
Haul-away often gets paid for at checkout without anyone reading the part explaining what it actually covers.
A lot of the calls we get on this sound the same. Not "how do I get rid of this thing," but "why didn't the store take it like they said they would?"
Fair question. The answer is usually buried deep in the checkout flow.
What free haul-away usually covers (and what it doesn't)
Most of the big retailers around the Treasure Valley do offer it. Lowe's, Home Depot, Best Buy, the local appliance shops too. But it comes with rules, and the rules are the whole story.
The standard version is one for one, same category, same room. You buy a dryer, they take a dryer, from the spot where the new one's going. That's the deal.
So the beer fridge in the garage isn't included when you're replacing the kitchen fridge. Bought a washer and also want the dishwasher you pulled out last month gone? No. Old unit down in the basement, new one going in the mudroom? Usually also no.
Then there's the part that trips up the most people. The old appliance has to be disconnected and empty before the truck shows up. Water line off, gas shut off and capped by somebody licensed, freezer cleared out, hoses drained.
Delivery crews run a lot of stops in a day, and most of them aren't allowed to touch a gas line. We got into who's actually supposed to handle that part in [our guide on unhooking appliances yourself](/blog/appliance-removal-boise-who-disconnects-it).
Heads up: Most retailers void haul-away if there's no clear path to the door. Snow on the walk in January, a laundry room stacked with moving boxes, a side gate that's padlocked. The crew notes it, leaves the old unit sitting there, and you're back to square one with no refund on the fee you paid.
Why the crew says no at the door
It's rarely attitude. Drivers get graded on time windows, and the truck already has the next deliveries loaded in a specific order. There's genuinely no room for a fridge that wasn't on the manifest.
There's a liability piece too. If a driver pulls a water line and it leaks behind your wall two weeks later, that's the retailer's problem. So the policy is blunt: they don't touch connections.
Refrigerant rules matter here as well. Anything with a compressor (fridge, freezer, window AC unit) has to be handled a certain way, and not every delivery outfit is set up for it.
What appliance removal costs if you handle it yourself
Here's how the options compare in the Boise, Meridian, and Nampa area.
| Option | Typical cost | What you deal with |
|---|---|---|
| Store haul-away | $0 to $50 | Must be one for one, disconnected, clear path |
| Hauling it to Hidden Hollow yourself | $10 to $30 in fees, plus your truck and time | Loading, straps, the drive, refrigerant paperwork |
| Scrap yard drop-off | Free, sometimes a small payout | Only worth it for metal-heavy units, still your haul |
| Junk removal pickup | $75 to $175 for one appliance | Nothing. Point at it. |
The per-unit cost usually drops once there's more than one. A washer, dryer, and dead dishwasher going out together typically cost less than three separate charges, because the price is based on how much truck space they take up. Volume drives the number, not the count.
And if the thing still runs, don't pay anybody. Idaho Youth Ranch takes working appliances at several Treasure Valley locations, and Western Recycling will take metal units off your hands. We laid out all of those routes in [our rundown of appliance disposal options around Boise](/blog/appliance-disposal-options-boise).
Yes, we'd love the job. But a working dryer somebody else could actually use shouldn't ride in our truck.
When paying for appliance removal beats the free option
Sometimes the free version costs you more in aggravation than it saves.
- You've got more than one old appliance going out
- The old unit sits in a basement, an outbuilding, or an upstairs laundry room
- It's a gas range or gas dryer and nobody's capped the line yet
- The delivery window is a long block and you'd rather not spend it guessing
In those cases, book [appliance removal](/junk-removal/appliance-removal) on your own schedule and let the delivery crew just deliver. How long the stop takes depends on how many units there are and how tricky they are to get out.
One more thing if you're weighing the DIY route with a washer and dryer on stairs. Those things are heavier and more awkward than they look, and a dryer will happily take a chunk out of your drywall on the way up.
Bottom line
Store haul-away is genuinely useful when your situation matches the fine print. One old unit, same category, already disconnected, sitting right where the new one goes. Match those four things and take the free ride.
Miss any of them and it's usually simpler to book [appliance removal](/junk-removal/appliance-removal) separately than to reschedule a delivery around it.
