Ask two questions: Have I used this in the past year? Would I buy it again today?

What's Worth Donating

Good rule: if you'd give it to a friend without embarrassment, donate it.

Boise has solid options. Idaho Youth Ranch takes furniture, clothing, and household goods. The Boise Rescue Mission accepts many household items. Habitat for Humanity ReStore wants building materials, cabinets, and appliances that work.

What donation centers don't want: stained mattresses, broken electronics, recalled items, and anything that smells. Donating junk just makes volunteers deal with your trash.

What Has Real Resale Value

Sell it if it's worth more than $50 and you'll actually list it this week. Otherwise the "sell pile" becomes a permanent resident of your garage.

Things that genuinely sell in the Treasure Valley: tools, working appliances, solid wood furniture, and outdoor gear. Things that rarely sell: entertainment centers, china cabinets, and exercise equipment. Nobody wants your treadmill. We're sorry. We don't want it either, but we'll haul it.

What Just Goes

Broken, stained, expired, moldy, recalled - toss pile, no guilt. Same for the bottom 80 percent of paper clutter once you've pulled out legal documents, titles, and photos.

Let the Sorted Piles Leave Fast

Here's the step people miss: once you've sorted, get the piles out quickly. A donate pile that sits for a month migrates back into the house.
