Before You Touch Anything

Pick your deadline. A move date, a listing date, anything. Home cleanouts without a deadline drag on for months.

The Room Order That Works

Start with the rooms that have the least sentimental stuff:

Bathrooms and linen closets first - almost everything is an easy call
Kitchen next - duplicate gadgets and expired pantry items go fast
Living areas and bedrooms
Garage, basement, and attic
Photos, papers, and keepsakes dead last

That last one matters. If you start with the memory boxes, you'll spend four hours reading old letters and clear nothing. Save them for the end, when you've built decision-making muscle.

The Two-Minute Rule

If you can't decide on an item in two minutes, put it in a "maybe" box and move on. At the end, you get one pass through the maybe boxes. Most of it goes once you see how much progress you've made.

When to Call In Help

Do the sorting yourself if you can - nobody else knows what matters to you. But the hauling is a different story. Once you've decided what goes, a cleanout crew can clear in one afternoon what would take you six dump runs.
