A guy over in Meridian called us on a Sunday afternoon last spring. He'd blocked off the whole weekend for a two-car garage cleanout, started Saturday at eight, and by the time he called he'd cleared maybe a third of it.

He wasn't slacking. He kept opening boxes.

That's the real answer to how long this takes. It depends less on how much stuff is sitting in there and more on how many decisions you have to make about it.

Hauling is fast. Deciding is slow.

How long a garage cleanout takes with a crew

When the sorting is already done and the "goodbye" pile is stacked somewhere we can reach it, two guys move faster than most people expect. At that point it's just repetition.

Here's roughly what we see across the Treasure Valley:

Those are load times only. They don't count our drive to the transfer station or a donation drop, and you're not paying for that part anyway.

One thing that does move the number is access. If we can back up the driveway and the door opens all the way, we're in good shape.

Some of the older Boise neighborhoods are a different story. Narrow alleys, street parking, and suddenly we're carrying everything 50 or 60 feet. Add half an hour, sometimes more.

Why a DIY garage cleanout eats a whole weekend

The lifting isn't what gets you. It's the round trips.

A half-ton pickup holds about a third of what our truck does, so a typical two-car garage turns into three or four loads. Each run out to Hidden Hollow at the Ada County landfill costs you 40 minutes to an hour of driving from most of the valley, plus whatever the scale line looks like. Saturdays are the worst for that.

Then there's the donation stop. Idaho Youth Ranch takes furniture and household goods in decent shape, but they're picky about condition and they close earlier than you'd think.

Scrap metal is its own errand. Old shelving brackets, that dead water heater in the corner, the busted grill: Western Recycling will take all of it, but that's another trip across town.

Add it up honestly. Four hours of sorting, three dump runs, a donation drop, and a metal run puts you at 12 to 16 hours. That's two full Saturdays, assuming nothing goes sideways.

Tip: Don't start by opening boxes. Pull everything out onto the driveway first, all of it, before you make a single decision. An empty garage with your whole life sitting in the sun creates a deadline you can't ignore, and you'll move about three times faster because of it.

What actually slows a garage cleanout down

After enough of these, the same handful of things eat hours on almost every job:

Paint, solvents, and old gas cans. They can't ride in a regular load, so they get set aside and handled on their own.
Boxes from your parents' house. Nobody clears one of these in under twenty minutes. Plan for it.
Tools you might need someday. Hardest category there is. You already know which shelf I'm talking about.

Here's what surprises people. The actual junk barely matters.

An old couch, a broken treadmill, six bags of yard waste? That's five minutes of loading. The lawnmower you're not sure still runs is the twenty-minute conversation.

How to get it done in one day

Most folks spend a couple hours Friday evening pulling things into three zones on the driveway: keeping, donating, gone. We show up Saturday morning, load the gone pile, and the garage is empty by lunch. That's a garage cleanout finished in a day instead of dragged across two weekends.
