A guy over in Meridian called us about freezer removal in late July. His chest freezer in the garage had quit sometime while he was up at McCall for a week, and nobody noticed until the smell got out to the driveway.

Half an elk, two summers of huckleberries, and about forty pounds of something he couldn't identify anymore. He opened the lid once. That was plenty.

If yours died with food still inside, you're in a different spot than somebody swapping out a working fridge. The appliance is the easy part. The food is what turns it into a bad afternoon.

Why a dead freezer goes sideways so fast

A full chest freezer holds its cold for a day or two after it loses power. That's the good news and the bad news.

Catch it early and you might save most of what's in there. Miss it and everything thawed slowly inside a sealed insulated box, then sat there in the dark.

In a Treasure Valley summer, an uninsulated garage hits triple digits by mid-afternoon. Two weeks of that and there's liquid pooled in the bottom I'd rather not describe. The gasket holds it all in until somebody breaks the seal.

That's the part people get wrong. They figure they'll have it hauled off as-is and let it be somebody else's problem. Fair enough, and we've taken plenty of them exactly like that.

But a sealed freezer stops being sealed the second it tips 30 degrees onto a dolly.

Tip: Not cleaning it out? Run two wraps of duct tape around the lid seam before your pickup. Looks silly. It keeps the gasket from popping when the unit gets tipped, which is exactly when the mess ends up on your floor instead of staying where it belongs.

Cleaning it out before freezer removal (if you can stomach it)

You don't have to. But it usually knocks something off the price, and it definitely saves your garage floor.

If you're going to do it, do it once and do it right, so you're not going back in there tomorrow.

✓Work outside, or with the garage door all the way open and a fan pointed out

✓Contractor bags, doubled up. Kitchen bags will fail on you at the worst possible moment.

✓Nitrile gloves and a cheap mask you're fine throwing away after

✓A wheelbarrow or an old cooler so the bags go straight to the trash bin, not across the floor

✓Baking soda or a bag of charcoal briquettes left inside overnight afterward

Your curbside bin takes food waste, so most of this goes out with the household trash. Just time it right. Put the bags out the day before pickup, not four days before, or you've only moved the smell from the garage to the side of the house.

If it's a big chest freezer, split it across two collection weeks. Nobody's grading you on speed.

One thing people skip: if your model has a drain plug at the bottom, pull it and set a shallow pan underneath. Getting the standing liquid out before anybody lifts the unit is the best five minutes you'll spend on this whole job.

What freezer removal actually costs around Boise

For a single freezer, most jobs in Boise, Meridian, and Nampa land between $110 and $175. An upright in an attached garage with a straight shot to the driveway sits at the low end.

A big chest freezer in a finished basement with a tight turn at the bottom of the stairs runs higher. That's a two-person carry with real odds of dinged drywall.

Heavily soiled units can add a bit, mostly for tarps and cleanup on our end. We'll say so up front, not after.

Here's the honest version, even though we'd happily take the standalone job: if you've got other stuff piling up, bundle it. Adding a freezer to a load that already has a couch and a pile of garage clutter costs way less than calling us out for the freezer alone.

Where your old freezer ends up

Freezers run on refrigerant, same as your fridge. A certified tech has to recover it before any of the metal can be scrapped, and it's not something you or I can legally vent into the air. We get into how that works in what about the freon.

After recovery, the shell is mostly steel and copper, and that goes to a scrap yard like Western Recycling. The foam insulation and plastic liner aren't recyclable, so they end up at the Ada County landfill out at Hidden Hollow.

Can you donate it instead? Only if it runs.

Idaho Youth Ranch and the local thrift stores won't take a dead appliance, and they shouldn't have to eat the disposal cost either. Bottom line

A freezer that died full is really two jobs stacked together: a nasty cleanout and a heavy appliance haul. Do the food yourself and you'll pay less. Tape the lid and hand us the whole thing if you'd rather not, and nobody here is going to judge you.
