Yard waste removal branches sod grass Boise guide: what counts as yard waste, how volume pricing works, disposal options, and when your city cart will do.

When it comes to yard waste removal—branches, sod, grass—Boise has three real options: your city cart, a trip to the landfill, or hiring removal services to haul it off. Small jobs belong in the cart. Big piles, heavy sod and mixed loads usually make more sense to load once and be done with.

What counts as yard waste, and what doesn't?

Most Boise yard projects end up with the same mix. Branches and limbs, brush, hedge trimmings, grass clippings, leaves, weeds, pine needles, old bark, cut-up tree rounds, rolled sod. All of it is normal yard waste for us.

Clean green material like this can often go to a compost or green waste facility instead of getting buried, as long as it isn't mixed with trash.

Dirt, sod with a lot of soil still hanging on it, and landscape rock are a different animal. They're heavy, they get loaded differently, and they can't ride on top of a pile of brush.

If you're pulling up a whole lawn, the usual way is to rent a sod cutter then backfill the low spots with topsoil before anything new goes down. Roll the strips tight and keep them a size you can lift, because sod removal is mostly a weight problem.

If your project has both brush and soil, say so when you call. It changes how we plan the load.

Then there's the stuff that ends up in a yard pile without really being yard waste: broken fence panels, old landscape timbers, a coil of drip line, two bags of concrete mix that went hard years ago. We'll take that too. It's ordinary junk, and it goes to a different disposal site than the green waste.

Good to know: Keep yard waste and junk in separate piles if you can. Sorting ahead of time makes loading go quicker.

Your yard waste removal options for branches, sod, grass in Boise

If the yard waste you cut fits in your city cart over the next few pickups, use the cart. We'd take the job, but paying someone to haul what your trash service already picks up doesn't make much sense.

Check your city's rules first. They set what goes in the cart and how often pickup happens, and those details change, so look at the current city services page before you fill it.

The second option is hauling it yourself. Plenty of people do, and it works fine if you own a trailer. Load it, tarp it, run it out to the Ada County landfill, pay the disposal fee, unload it in the wind. Out in Nampa and Caldwell, Canyon County runs its own disposal site, so check its current hours first.

Two things nobody warns you about. Pine pitch does not come off a truck bed easily, and brush loaded loose takes more trips than the one you planned on.

The third option is a professional yard debris haul away from junk removal services. Pricing is by volume, so you're paying for the space your pile takes up, not by the hour and not by somebody guessing at weight.

We come look, give you a firm price before anything gets touched, and if you'd rather not, the estimate was still free. How long the job takes depends on the size of the pile, how it's stacked and how far the loaders have to carry it.

Quick tip: Before pickup day, cut your brush into short, even lengths and stack it with the cut ends facing the same way. Since the price follows volume, a smaller pile costs less.

Why the shape of the yard debris pile changes the price

Brush is mostly air. A tangled heap of Russian olive limbs with branches poking every direction can eat far more truck space than that same brush takes once it's cut and stacked.

So why would a load of sticks cost more than a load of sod? Because we're selling room, not pounds. A pickup bed of wet sod outweighs a trailer of branches and still takes up less space.

When we walk your yard and give you a number, we're reading the pile, not a scale.

Carry distance counts too. A pile behind a locked gate, on the far side of a house out in Kuna, or down a slope in Harris Ranch takes longer to move, and we'll say so up front instead of adding it on after.

Gate width is the big one. If we can't get through with an armload of branches, everything goes the long way around the house, and the loaders make more trips.

After that it's the surprises. Landscape fabric woven through the pile, chicken wire buried in the brush, a sprinkler head nobody wants to step on. If you know something's in there, point at it on pickup day.

Here's what tends to move pricing up or down:

  • How much space the pile takes up once it's loaded
  • Heavy material like soil-heavy sod, dirt or rock
  • Junk mixed into the yard waste, since it goes to a different disposal site
  • Carry distance, slopes, stairs and gate width
  • Wire, fabric or vines tangled through the brush

When is the best time for yard debris removal?

Spring tends to be the busy season. A lot of people across the valley, Meridian's Ten Mile corridor included, take on landscaping projects around the same time, so schedules can fill up. If you want a particular day, it helps to schedule yard waste removal before the pile is even finished.

By August a brush pile that's been baking for weeks is dry, sharp, and often has wasps living in it. Look before you grab an armload.

Fall is leaves, and leaves are easy. Bagged is easier still. It's also easy to overfill a cart in fall, so check whether your city runs a leaf pickup before paying for leaf removal.

Winter is the one to avoid if you have a choice. Snow-soaked leaves weigh a lot more, frozen sod won't lift, and a pile that froze into the ground in December turns into a February problem.

One more thing on timing: don't plan on burning it. Burn rules for yard debris vary across the valley, and during inversion season it's a bad idea even where it's legal.

Frequently asked yard waste and yard debris questions

How do you dispose of old sod from a yard?

A few pieces can go in the cart if your city allows it. For a whole lawn, the rolls either go to the landfill or out on a hauler's pickup. Soil-heavy sod is dense, so plan for the weight.

What is the yard waste pickup schedule in Lewiston, Idaho?

Lewiston sets its own pickup schedule, so check with the city's public works office. We don't serve Lewiston. Our work stays in the Treasure Valley.

How do you dispose of branches from your yard for free?

If your city offers a yard waste or compost cart, it's usually the no-extra-cost route for branches that fit once they're cut down, with curbside pickup on your regular day. Some trash services also run seasonal drop-off days, and some people chip branches into mulch for their own beds.

Is yard debris pickup priced by weight?

Not with us. Pricing follows volume, so a tidy, stacked pile takes up less room than a loose one. Heavy material like sod and dirt still changes how the load gets planned.

Bottom line on yard waste

If it fits in your cart, use the cart. If the pile is bigger than your car, cut it short, stack it neat, and get a price on hauling it off. Pricing for yard waste removal comes down to space, material and access.
