Storage Unit Cleanout in Boise: Here's the Real Playbook

A storage unit cleanout in Boise or Nampa takes longer than you think. Here's what drives the cost, how to sort fast, and how to avoid paying another month.

Open storage unit filled with stacked boxes and an old armchair during a cleanout in Nampa, Idaho

There's a moment in almost every storage unit cleanout where somebody rolls up the door, stares at boxes they haven't opened in years, and says the same thing: "I have no idea what's in half of these."

That's normal. Storage units are where stuff goes to be forgotten.

If you're clearing one out in Boise, the hard part usually isn't the lifting. It's deciding what actually comes home with you.

We've emptied units all over the Treasure Valley, from the older row of facilities out on Fairview to the newer buildings near the Meridian line. The pattern barely changes. Usually only a small share of what's in there is worth keeping, and the rest has been quietly costing somebody rent every month.

Do the Math Before You Open a Single Box

Take your monthly rent and multiply it by how long you've had the unit. That's the whole exercise.

Rent depends on the unit size, the facility, and whether it's climate controlled, but a few years of it adds up fast. Suddenly the couch you were saving "just in case" has a different price tag on it.

This isn't a guilt trip. It's just useful context when you're standing there holding a box of college textbooks. The storage may have already cost you more than replacing most of it would.

Tip: Read your lease before you schedule anything. Some facilities only prorate the final month if you're out by a specific date. Missing it by a couple of days can cost you a full extra month.

What a Storage Unit Cleanout Actually Costs in Boise

Pricing works like any other haul. We charge by how much room your stuff takes up in the truck, not by the hour. Here's what moves the price for a unit in Boise, Meridian, and Nampa.

Unit sizeTypical fillBallpark cost
5x5 or 5x10Quarter truck$180 - $300
10x10Half truck$350 - $500
10x15Half to full truck$450 - $700
10x20 packed to the ceilingFull truck or more$650 - $900+

The price assumes normal household stuff. Anything with a disposal fee attached, like mattresses, tube TVs, or fridges with refrigerant still in them, can add to it.

The part people don't expect is the time. A packed unit takes longer than most people expect, not a quick in-and-out. Storage units are dense. Everything's stacked, nothing has a clear path to the door, and half of it has to come out before the rest can move.

Sort Outside the Unit, Not Inside It

Here's the mistake almost everybody makes. They try to sort inside the unit, in a narrow aisle, squinting at boxes.

Don't. Pull everything into the drive aisle first if the facility allows it, and most do during business hours. You can see what you have, and you'll make decisions much faster.

Then run it through four piles:

  • Keep — stuff you've actually thought about in the last year
  • Donate — furniture, clothes, and kitchen gear in usable shape. Idaho Youth Ranch takes most of it, and the Habitat ReStore off Overland will take cabinets, doors, and light fixtures
  • Recycle — metal goes to Western Recycling, and they'll pay you for a decent load of scrap
  • Toss — anything moldy, water damaged, or broken past the point of caring

Set a rule for the Keep pile before you start. Something like "it has to fit in my car." Without a rule, Keep grows until it fills whatever space you've got.

A few things surprise people every time. Mice, for one. Units aren't sealed, so cardboard sitting on a concrete floor for a few years is fair game. Check boxes before you load them into your back seat.

Water on the bottom row is the other one. Concrete sweats, and units can take on a little water in a wet spring. Anything sitting flat on the floor deserves a look.

Old paint and pool chemicals show up too. Facilities don't allow them, people store them anyway, and neither we nor the Ada County landfill can take them in a normal load. Those go to the household hazardous waste site on Hillcrest, which is free for Ada County residents. Old tax records and bank statements? Pull those out and shred them instead of burying them in the pile.

When a Storage Unit Cleanout Is Worth Doing Yourself

Honestly, if you've got a small unit, a pickup, and a free Saturday, do it yourself. A small unit doesn't take many runs to the landfill, and you'll keep the hauling cost in your pocket. We'd happily take the job, but you don't need us for that one.

It flips when the unit's big, you're up against a lease date, or the furniture is heavy. Getting a sleeper sofa down a narrow corridor is miserable work, and the Ada County landfill closes earlier than people assume. Miss the gate and you're storing it in your truck overnight.

We run [junk removal](/junk-removal) across the valley, storage facilities from Caldwell to Eagle included.

One thing that saves you money: sort first, then call. If you've already pulled out what you're keeping, we're only hauling what's actually leaving, and you pay for less truck space. That's true for any [junk removal](/junk-removal) job, but it matters most on storage units, where the volume is easy to guess wrong.

The Bottom Line

A storage unit cleanout is a decision-making job wearing the costume of a lifting job. Set a rule for what you keep, sort where you can actually see everything, and watch your lease date so you're not paying for another month you don't need.

If the unit's bigger than a weekend, or you just don't feel like making the landfill run, give us a call at (208) 593-2877. We'll give you a free estimate and a firm price before anything gets touched, and if renting a truck for an afternoon makes more sense for you, we'll tell you that.
